Mermaids are the modern version of the Goddess. Which goddess? According to psychologists it doesn't really matter because they all basically represent the same thing. For men she is the mother symbol either nurturing or destructive – depending on what type of relationship you had with your mother! For women she represents the power of creation that they have within themselves.
For men and women the Goddess has strong spiritual meanings. For example, the Goddess is a fertility symbol. Fertility is the power of creation. What is created may be for good or bad. (This is why a goddess will have contradictory qualities.) It is human to divide things into good and bad but for the Goddess there are no such distinctions.
